Writing a Query

You can submit valid SQL or ADQL to the Data Central database server. View the docs to browse the supported ADQL functions.

When constructing SQL/ADQL, it is important to adopt the correct syntax.

Tables are addressed in the form:

SURVEY_DATARELEASE.TABLE
with a dot (.) as the delimiter.

You can find the correct name for each table and column in the Schema Browser below (see the name field). For example, the GalacticExtinction table from the InputCat group from the GAMA second data release is addressed as:

Tips
  • Do not include the group name as part of your query. There are dozens of tables from multiple surveys in the Data Central database, Groups are used to collect scientifically-related tables together, in order to help the user locate the correct table more quickly. However, the group name is not needed when addressing the table in SQL.

    The SQL to return all columns and rows from a table is:

GAMA is a project to exploit the latest generation of ground-based and space-borne survey facilities to study cosmology and galaxy formation and evolution.

At the heart of this project lies the GAMA spectroscopic survey of ~300,000 galaxies down to r < 19.8 mag over ~286 deg2, carried out using the AAOmega multi-object spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT) by the GAMA team. This project was awarded 210 nights over 7 years (2008–2014) and the observations are now completed. This survey builds on, and is augmented by, previous spectroscopic surveys such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey(2dFGRS) and the Millennium Galaxy Catalogue (MGC).

The second GAMA data release (DR2) provides AAT/AAOmega spectra, redshifts and a wealth of ancillary information for 72,225 objects from the first phase of the GAMA survey (2008 - 2010, usually referred to as GAMA I). The DR2 web pages describe the data included in this release, and provide access to an SQL database as well as to the actual data (spectra and catalogues).
